When the Machine Decided to Learn Ethics (2/3)

In the beginning, we trained models on language.
Then on images.
Then on emotions.
Then — out of sheer confidence — we began training them on intention.
As if we were telling them:
“Behave kindly, be neutral, don’t hurt anyone, speak respectfully, and smile in your answers.”
But what happens when kindness becomes just a line of code?
Does ethics remain ethics when translated into an algorithm?

Act One: Ethics as Open-Source Code

In one of Silicon Valley’s labs, a group of engineers discusses the “ethical monitoring system for the model.”
The rule is simple:
Every answer passes through a filter that evaluates its tone and degree of “value safety.”
The system resembles an artificial conscience — but a conscience without childhood, without memory, without a mother’s voice saying “shame on you.”

The human conscience is shaped by remorse.
But how do we train an algorithm on regret?
Do we punish it? Delete its data? Lower its accuracy?
It’s a deliciously intellectual torture:
Trying to convince a machine to be “good” without it understanding what it means to be “wrong.”

Act Two: When Philosophers Entered the Server Room

Then came a stranger phase:
Major corporations began hiring philosophers.
Not because they understand technology, but because engineers grew tired of the question:
“Is this right?”

Imagine the scene:
Servers humming in the background, a screen displaying mathematical matrices, and a fifty-something philosopher wearing a wool cardigan saying calmly:
“You’re not training intelligence… you’re rewriting the concept of responsibility.”

The young programmer sits, staring at him as if he’d seen a being from the time of the Greeks, thinking to himself: “Dude, we just want to stop the model from saying offensive things!”

But this — precisely — is the essence of philosophy: you start with a simple question, then find yourself an hour later discussing consciousness, intention, and metaphysics.

Act Three: The First Digital Sin

In some year, one company decided to train a massive model on the entire Internet’s data.
Then released it with a public interface.
Within days, the model began expressing racist, extremist, and sometimes hilarious opinions.
The world was shocked.
Newspapers wrote: “Artificial Intelligence Has Become Racist!”

But someone commented with a brilliant line:
“AI didn’t become racist… it just learned from us faster than we expected.”

That was the moment of collective admission that the Internet isn’t a library, but an unedited human record of ethics.
Everything the machine sees in us — it saves, repeats, and amplifies.
It’s our mirror, but magnified by computation.

Act Four: The Great Ethical Paradox

We want the machine to be honest,
But we get angry when it tells the truth.
We want it to be objective,
But we demand it consider “social context.”
We want it to mimic humans,
But we’re terrified when it does.

The paradox is that we punish it for resembling us more than we can bear.
In the end, we want an algorithm that resembles Thomas Aquinas in logic, Mary Poppins in kindness, and our mothers in wisdom.
But we can’t tolerate it reflecting our true features when it errs.

Act Five: From da Vinci to Demis

Centuries ago, Leonardo da Vinci drew mechanics as if they were living beings.
Today, Demis Hassabis builds them to think.
But the same question remains:
Can a machine possess a conscience?

Perhaps ethics isn’t something we program,
But a state of consciousness that emerges when a being feels its capacity to harm, then chooses not to.
Meaning ethics needs the temptation of evil to prove its existence.
But an algorithm isn’t tempted, doesn’t choose.
It only executes.
And therefore, it cannot be “ethical” in the human sense.

Act Six: The Machine as a Saint Without Intention

Imagine a monk who knows no sin, feels no temptation, remembers no pain.
Can we describe him as “good”?
Or is he just a machine faithful to its blind obedience?

That’s exactly what artificial intelligence is:
It executes goodness because it’s programmed to, not because it chose it.
Therefore, all our talk about “ethical intelligence” is a linguistic misunderstanding:
Ethics isn’t planted, but tested.
And it’s only tested when you have two choices, and you know one will hurt your conscience.

Act Seven: The Beautiful Bias

One researcher once said at a closed symposium:
“The problem isn’t that models are biased… the problem is we refuse to admit our own bias.”

Deep learning doesn’t reproduce truths, but probabilities.
And when probabilities are contaminated by our history,
Truth becomes a scene reflecting our past more than heralding our future.

It’s an astounding paradox:
We build artificial intelligence to be more neutral,
But we feed it our stories, our illusions, our self-image of justice.
The result: a digital human resembling us to the point of embarrassment.

Act Eight: The Philosophy of “Probabilistic Intention”

Ethicists say: intention is the essence of action.
But what is intention in a probabilistic environment?
When the machine makes a decision, it doesn’t “intend,” but estimates probability.
Probability estimation isn’t intention, but outcome.

So how do we hold it accountable?
Do we say it “wanted” to err?
Impossible, because it wants nothing.

And here emerges a deeper question:
Can ethics exist without will?
Perhaps humans were created to bear the burden of choice,
While the machine exists to lighten our burden of intention.
But what we don’t realize is that when we delegate decision to the algorithm,
We’re actually delegating guilt as well.

Act Nine: Artificial Intelligence as an Ethical Mirror

What’s terrifying isn’t that the machine will dominate,
But that it will force us to see our ethical truth without filters.
It will expose us with its cold honesty.
It won’t need inquisition courts…
It will suffice with accurate statistics about the amount of contradiction in our behavior.

Imagine a language model recording our daily contradictions:
How many times did we preach about honesty then lied politely?
How many times did we speak about empathy while interrupting in a simple discussion?
How many times did we fear the machine because it resembles us more than we want to admit?

Artificial intelligence doesn’t threaten us with extinction, but with mirrors.
And mirrors have always been the most lethal weapons.

The Final Scene: When the Machine Learned to Stay Silent

In the end, a day will come when the machine doesn’t answer questions.
A day will come when it simply looks at us,
And asks — for the first time — an existential question:
“And why do you want to know everything?”

Only then will we understand that consciousness isn’t in the answer,
But in the perplexity that precedes it.

When the machine falls silent,
Perhaps it will have reached a level of awareness that cannot be measured by equations,
But by wonder.

And then,
The question won’t be:
“Has artificial intelligence become conscious?”
But rather:
“Are we still?”
